Kathy Norwine, MSW, LCSW, LICSW
Kathy Norwine is a Licensed Clincial Social Worker (LCSW, LICSW) and is licensed to practice psychotherapy independently in Virginia, DC and New Jersey. She holds a master’s degree in Social Work (MSW) from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and a bachelor of science in Human Resources (BSHR) from the University of Delaware.
Kathy has extensive experience providing outpatient individual psychotherapy and crisis intervention to survivors of rape and child sexual abuse, and to partners/significant others, families, and friends of survivors. In addition to the individual psychotherapy work, Kathy also facilitates support groups for rape and child sexual abuse survivors.
* * Kathy was the recipient of the 2003 DC Rape Crisis Center Visionary Award for her work at the Center.
Ms. Norwine was one of only a few civilian therapists chosen to provide grief and crisis counseling to the families of the victims of the September 11, 2001 Pentagon attack at the Pentagon Family Assistance Center, where the families were housed. In addition, she accompanied affected families on site visits to the Pentagon crash site, to twice-daily update briefings with Lt. General John VanAlstyne, to victim funerals, to the Pentagon Memorial Service and September 11th anniversary events.
* * For her counseling work with the families at the Pentagon Family Assistance Center, Kathy received a letter of commendation/gratitude from Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld for her outstanding and tireless work.
Ms. Norwine was most recently chosen by SAMHSA (the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) to deploy to New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Louisiana to counsel survivors of hurricanes Katrina & Rita. She provided on-site crisis intervention, grief and counseling to survivors of all ages. Ms. Norwine worked with displaced survivors, counseled families at FEMA trailer parks and shelters where evacuees were housed, assessing critical need and provided crisis counseling.
Ms. Norwine also provided support and counsel to clinical and other helping professionals experiencing their own stress responses and vicarious traumatization.

As a psychotherapist in private practice in Alexandria, Virginia, Ms. Norwine provides individual psychotherapy to a wide range of clients, including adolescents and adults dealing with various presenting problems (depression, anxiety, grief, crisis/trauma, PTSD, substance abuse, relational issues, work/career challenges), clinical diagnoses, and ensuing mental health issues.
